Carolina Headwaters, L.L.C.was started by a husband and wife team in an effort to increase understanding and conservation efforts of Carolina Watersheds as well as educate and inspire citizens to be good stewards and advocates for their environment.

Dr. Shem Unger, Executive Director, currently serves on Faculty at Wingate University where he mentors students in becoming biologists and science educators. His 20+ years of research experience has focused on freshwater conservation through a better understanding of native animal natural history.  Current research focuses on the biology and conservation of the Eastern Hellbender.

Shannon Unger, M.A., M.S., Education Director, has a Masters in both Biology and Science Education. She has been an educator for 20+ years and has served as the Outreach Coodinator for the Geos Institute, Crew Leader for World Wildlife Fund, EE Coordinator for the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab, Program Director for Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, and a Middle School Science Teacher (Probably the most challenging and rewarding job!).

Both our education and work experiences have grounded us in a passion for natural spaces and flowing waters. At Carolina Headwaters, we believe that high quality research and engaging outreach are the keys to environmental conservation and a better world for our community.
